MOVE’s 2nd Annual BBQ #inthemoment

by kpark 26. July 2011 13:38

I’m back!
Sorry it has been so long since you’ve heard from me, but MOVE had me busy planning our summer BBQ. Now that it is over, I have some time to recap the big day—or, as I refer to it- D-day.

Last year, we encouraged neighborhood
The theme of last year’s BBQ was “Encouraging Neighborhood.” It was about getting more involved in the community and encouraging neighboring companies to break away from their busy routine and take time to get to know each other.

This year, we were #inthemoment
Being a new year, and having some new faces at MOVE, it was my job to refresh the theme—a lofty task! However, it turned out it wasn’t something I had to really think up, it just sort of happened. One Friday morning, we all had our iPhones out and I was giving a Twitter tutorial, no big deal, so everyone could easily tweet from their iPhones whether they were in the office, meeting with a client or on a video shoot and I commented that MOVE is really #inthemoment. Don, MOVE Communications President, liked this saying (although it wasn’t a Facebook official “like”) and we thought it would be an appropriate BBQ theme since we would be promoting and chronicling the BBQ on Facebook and Twitter. That’s why from the planning process to the actual event, we were a lean, mean, tweeting (and status updating) machine.

The BBQ was planned for Thursday, July 14, so that Jamie, MOVE's Creative Design Manager, could make it from North Carolina. We were glad to have Jamie here because it was a team event and we joined forces to make it just as successful as last year. Kim, MOVE Associate Writer and Project Coordinator, was my wingman…er woman, helping me with everything from invitations to keeping balloons from flying away. Nikki, MOVE's Art Director, helped with the design aspects, and since Don is one of the few males in the office, he coordinated picking up the tables and chairs.  And last but not least, Carol, MOVE CEO, acted as hostess greeting guests.

#Success

Between 4 and 7 p.m., we had more than 50 people attend, representing more than 20 different companies. We grilled brats and had hot dogs and pulled pork while talking with some local neighborhood companies and other business professionals reaching as far as Grand Rapids. We also got to try a number of potluck items that our guests brought, like seven--layer dip, sausage bread—thanks Sandy at Eiler PR— and the kid’s favorite: Jell-O jigglers! #nom.  Plus, the caramel apple salad was so good it came up during our Monday morning Basecamp meeting—thanks to the Photo Studio Group.

Last year’s theme was not all lost as we saw neighbors from last year and got involved with the community by asking guests to donate to Food Gatherers, a local food bank that collects food for the homeless in Washtenaw County.

Thank You

We would like to thank everyone who attended and helped make the BBQ possible. For those of  you who couldn’t make it, we hope you felt like you were "in the moment" with us by visiting our  Twitter and Facebook page.

Entering the “Real World”

by kpark 20. May 2011 13:24

It’s been eight days since I’ve been in the “real world,” aka MOVE Communications. I’m working here as a summer intern until August. After finishing my junior year at Saint Mary’s College (SMC), I made the trek north toward Ann Arbor. This is my first extended stay in the area; I usually just come by to watch the Notre Dame Fightin’ Irish beat the Wolverines. Go Irish!

Before I get all business on you, let me share some fun facts about myself, Katelynd Park:

  • I am a Mass Communications major with a minor in Spanish, Advertising and PR.
  • I have lived in five US states, three countries and speak two languages.
  •  I am a Student Ambassador at SMC and I am the President of Friends with Sisters (a school club where students are friends with a sister from the convent that is located on campus).
  • I play field hockey on the Notre Dame Club team.
  • It has been rumored that Linda, MOVE’s Executive Assistant, and I may be related.

Experiencing Marketing Communications
First I need to thank my last semester Marketing teacher, Robert Williams, who introduced me to SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis because during my first day at MOVE, I worked on a PowerPoint where this was the main focus.

To be honest, I always thought that PowerPoints would end with college, kind of like cursive ended with elementary school. Working at MOVE I’m seeing just how important they are for businesses, especially once MOVE adds in their strategic planning and creative concepts—from cool designs to catchy headlines. No, they didn’t pay me to say this!

It’s still early, but I’ve already had the opportunity to watch an experienced professional like Don Hart, MOVE’s President, interact with clients and develop a business plan that works for them. I’m starting to get familiar with e-mail marketing campaigns and how to apply business to social media—a big topic in my communication classes. And being a college student who is more or less addicted to social media, what could get better than that? #watchout

Introducing iPad 2

by kbeson 12. May 2011 15:31
You may or may not know, but most of us at MOVE are big Apple Fans. You name the Apple device or product and we probably have it! We figure many of you can relate so we thought it would be fun to give a nod to their latest gadget.

It’s not just us, iPad 2 popularity
Close to one million tablets were sold during the iPad 2’s March 11 launch weekend. Best Buy reported that some of their outlets had sold out of them within 10 minutes. By the end of the weekend, Apple and non-Apple stores alike were out of stock and uncertain when they would receive their next shipment.
Comparatively, Apple sold 300,000 original iPads during its launch in April 2010. Within the first nine months, 15 million iPad tablets were sold. Based on this, I think it is safe to say that the iPad 2 is sure to quickly exceed its predecessor’s popularity.

What’s new with iPad2?
The iPad 2‘s major claim to fame is that it’s one-third thinner,15 percent lighter and twice as fast. It boasts two HD cameras and such new features as gyroscope and mirroring. Plus, it’s now rounder around the edges. Might not seem like much, but according to The New York Times, David Pogue, “Just that much improvement in thinness, weight and speed transforms the experience.

  • FaceTime: The front camera can be used to video chat with like-minded apple enthusiasts who also own an iPad 2 and/or an iPhone 4 and Mac. The back camera is more for fun to show where you are, who you are with and catch any movie-worthy moments.
  • Gyroscope: A movement sensor that twists, turns and tilts with games, maps and apps.
  • Mirroring: Share  movies, pictures and music by connecting your iPad 2 to a flat screen TV or projector. Just plug in the Apple Digital VGA Adapter (sold separately). Or do so wirelessly through AirPlay, although this also requires another accessory, an Apple TV. Note: An Apple Representative suggested packaging Keynote presentations in QuickTime format to try and share presentations wirelessly.
  • Smart Cover: The new cover and iPad 2 literally attract—through magnets. Preserving battery is as easy as closing the smart cover. It is even lined with microfiber to remove fingerprints from the screen. But, that’s not all—it also acts as a stand so you can easily watch movies or surf the web. Who would ever have thought a cover could have so many capabilities!

Mixing business with iPad2
The iPad 2 caters to on-the-go professionals. Since it is now twice as fast, professionals can easily access, create and share business information, as well as multitask between apps. Not to mention, there are thousands of business apps to choose from. For those who travel a lot, make sure to buy the Wi-Fi + 3G models, because just like you’re smartphone, it connects to the internet no matter where you are. That’s what we have at MOVE because we spend a lot of time on the road going on site visits and meeting with clients.

Stay tuned, because we’ve decided to do an iPad series. Next time around we’ll blog about MOVE’s iPad Keynote experience.

Neighborhood Bar-B-Q

by jbodtke 29. July 2010 15:26

It’s been a week now since our Neighborhood Bar-B-Q and it was a great success!  We decided that our theme would be “Encouraging Neighborhood.”  The idea for the theme began with wanting to be more involved in our business community and getting to know the businesses and folks around us.  We realize that oftentimes businesses get “tunnel vision”—and who can blame them?  There are always so many day-to-day details to deal with in business that one can easily get caught up in their work.  As the old adage says--"There are never enough hours in the day."  So...the theme of "encouraging neighborhood" actually originated from the fact that we wanted to encourage companies around us to break away from their routine and engage with each other.  That’s why we were (and still are) encouraging neighborhood interaction.  We want the neighborhood to be an encouraging body, not just another business networking group.

Attending the Neighborhood Bar-B-Q, there were a total of 22 companies represented by approximately 55 individuals.  We enjoyed pulled pork, brats, fresh fruit, salads, grilled vegetables, baked beans, and wonderful desserts.  We also had some great live music from local "neighborhood" talent.

At MOVE, we believe that business is not about just "dollars and cents"; it’s about "relationships."

We’d like to extend a big neighborly "thank you" to the following organizations that came out in support of our Neighborhood Bar-B-Q!

Farmers as Founders

by Carol Hart 28. June 2010 14:42

Posted on a fence near the entrance to Greenfield Village is this quote from Daniel Webster:

“When tillage begins, other arts will follow. The farmers, therefore, are the founders of civilization.

If Webster’s pithy claim was true for an upstart America two centuries ago, could it also resonate in today’s post-industrial post-modern post-information America?  It would seem that more and more people believe so.  On Thursday I found myself enjoying their company at the Food System Economic Partnership (FSEP) Conference for “Building a Better Food System in Southeast Michigan” held in Jackson.  Jeff Bodtke, our new Account Coordinator at MOVE, who grew up on a blueberry farm in west Michigan, joined me for a full day of informative, interactive sessions, with topics ranging from savoring local flavors in Jackson to food and agriculture policy for Michigan.

Jeff and I attended separate sessions and we made some discoveries throughout the day:

Sandhill Crane Winery of Jackson makes a delicious, sweet raspberry wine—a dessert in itselfJ.

A grassroots campaign called Ten Percent Washtenaw affirms the enthusiasm for "locally grown" in our area, but wants us to know that at present only ½ of 1% of the $1 billion in food we consume annually is actually grown in Washtenaw County.  Ten Percent’s goal is to get us to 10% locally grown by 2010.

Ginny Trocchio, Project Director for The Conservation Fund/Ann Arbor Greenbelt, noted that, as Greenbelt land is being acquired, the Advisory Commission is strategically identifying critical areas for farmland preservation.  For a tour of Greenbelt farmland, check out the Greenbelt Bus Tour on July 17th.

The keynote speaker really brought it all together for me.  Michael Sands, founder of the Farm Business Development Center, described the Prairie Crossing project in north suburban Chicago as "an incubator for beginning organic farmers committed to creating financially rewarding and ecologically healthy farm businesses in the suburban landscape."  The incubator is not just a cool design for a suburban development connected to a local food source.  It makes economic sense.  One acre of intensively farmed organic vegetables can generate up to $20,000 in revenue, in contrast to the same acre of corn or soybeans at $600-$700! This revenue generates local jobs and pumps money into the local economy.

Could Ten Percent become a reality if Ann Arbor developed an incubator program in the Greenbelt?

As a business committed to helping our local economy go and grow, MOVE sees local farming as an essential ingredient of our area's future.  Hats off to Jennifer Fike and her team at FSEP for organizing a terrific event.  I wish I could have mentioned all of the incredible things Jeff and I heard, saw and tasted on Thursday, but hopefully this post will serve as a reminder that Webster’s fencepost quote rings true today.

Member Reception at Eagle Crest 6/24

by jbodtke 25. June 2010 11:47

Yesterday, the Eagle Crest Resort hosted an A2Y Chamber Reception for all members.  The networking event was a great opportunity, especially for me, to meet other members.  The reception was held in the beautiful clubhouse overlooking the golf course and Ford Lake.  Eagle Crest gift bags were handed out, prizes were given (unfortunately none to me), and hors d’oeuvres and drinks were served.

After the reception ended, Eagle Crest allowed A2Y Members to play golf at the twilight rate with a cart.  Bruce from Benz Insurance was nice enough to invite us into his golf party and also invited an individual player named Justin, who does electrical work in the area, to play with us as well.  We were quite a dynamic foursome--Bruce and Justin being the better players, with Don and I being there more for visual encouragement.  I finished my first nine holes at Eagle Crest at 52.  Don, on the other hand, doesn’t want me to publically announce his score, but if you come over to MOVE HQ, I would be more than willing to show you our scorecard.

I would highly recommend playing at Eagle Crest!  It is fun, challenging, and offers great views of Ford Lake.  A big "thank you" goes out to the awesome A2Y Chamber and Eagle Crest!

Morning Edition 6/16

by jbodtke 17. June 2010 16:52

On Wednesday, June 16, Carol Hart and I had the opportunity, with some of the newly combined A2Y Chamber members, to take a tour of the renovations of the Big House during Morning Edition.

Now, while I want to be 100% sure to claim allegiance to my true colors—green and white—I was very impressed with the renovations.  Our main tour was through the club seats and box office sections, but all of the improvements include:

  • Wider seats and aisles with handrails to make it easier for fans to move in the aisles.
  • New elevated concourses with additional restrooms and concessions along both sidelines.
  • More wheelchair locations along the sidelines.
  • Two new buildings on the north end of the stadium that will house additional restrooms, concessions and public safety services.
  • A new building on the south end of the stadium that will offer additional concessions and restrooms.
  • A new press box.
  • Refurbished restroom facilities.
  • 650+ new chairback seats on the west side.
  • 46 suites in the west side structure (33 suites located on the first level and 13 suites on the second level).
  • 1,900+ outdoor club seats and stadium lounge on the first level of the east side structure.
  • 250+ indoor club seats and 850+ covered outdoor club seats and stadium lounge on the second level of the east side structure.
  • 36 suites on the third level of the east side structure.
  • Four towers, one at the end of each sideline structure, which will have elevators and wide stairways to bring patrons to the new concourses and premium seating areas.

The project is scheduled to be completed in time for the Wolverines to play UCONN on September 4th.

It's A Celebration!

by Anna Erickson 8. July 2009 14:43

Yesterday we celebrated our 25th anniversary with some of our friends, colleagues, clients and partners here at MOVE headquarters.  It's easy to get down in the state of the economy and such these days but it was really refreshing to just take a break yesterday and reflect on our history.  We put together a slideshow of photos from the past 25 years and included a list of current and former MOVE employees and the people that we have worked with as partners or vendors throughout our history.  It's a great list of very talented people.  And it was really fun that some of you could make it to the party to celebrate with us.  If you weren't able to, here are some photos to show you all of the fun you missed out on.  And make sure you're here to celebrate with us in another 25!

Down South

by Jamie Bolak 22. June 2009 17:12

MOVE Communications Southern Office, Asheville, NC.

Maybe you have driven through Asheville on the way to Florida. If you had, you would remember it. You probably considered staying. That happens to a lot of folks. They drive through the winding mountain roads, experience the moderate climate, and enjoy the arty, outdoorsy vibe.

When you drive here or fly in from the north – you really get an amazing glimpse of the majestic mountains. Driving through them is breathtaking. Flying over them is almost so grand it gives you a scary feeling. It makes you feel moved that something so beautiful has been created. AND to live and work amongst them has been a special treat. Every day the scenery and the cloud formations change. In the past, rainy or cloudy days seemed sort of depressing, but here the clouds and sky changes make a special light show almost every night.

The people here really are kind and welcoming. You feel the southern hospitality. Coming from the North, at times we feel we are very culturally different but overall people are very interested to talk to us and we have been lucky enough to meet some great people that have some great stories about Asheville and its history. Since not a lot of people are originally from here – most people ask, “Where are you from?” Apparently I have a very distinct accent. I am usually called out on it in the first 10 minutes.  Does Detroit have its own accent?

For those who love to camp, hike, and enjoy the outdoors, you immediately notice all the active things to do. Whether on the Blue Ridge parkway or at one of the many parks or trails, you will not be at a loss for amazing views and fresh air.

The downtown area has quite a personality. The people, the vibe, and the food all provide a lot of character and charm.  Friday night drum circles, the Largest Home in America - the Biltmore Estate, outdoor activities for everyone. This list goes on. If you really want to enjoy it check out the 5-day weekend package going on through the Asheville Tourism association.  And make sure that you make a stop in at the Bolak Estate while you're here.
